What Is a Doula?
I firmly believe that every birthing person deserves support, guidance, and comfort throughout the process of bringing a new human into the world. In my role as a labor doula, I have the honor of providing all of that (and lots more) and this work never gets old.
What is a Labor Doula?
This is a question I’m asked often. Simply put, a labor doula is a trained professional who offers physical, emotional, and informational support to a birthing person before, during, and shortly after childbirth. Unlike doctors or midwives, who focus on the medical aspects of birth, a doula’s role is centered around the emotional well-being and personal needs of the birthing person. In my practice, I also provide a fair amount of support to the partners or significant others of birthing folks, knowing that it’s a lot for them to take in. Think about it this way: Midwives and doctors focus on the care of the inside of the pregnant person, ie. their overall health, the well-being of the baby, doing blood pressure and urine screenings, assessing for cervical dilation, etc. Doulas do none of that internal, more medical stuff, but focus more on the preparation for labor and birth both physically and mentally. We might provide some physical relief in the form of counter-pressure, hand-holding, massage, etc., but for the most part, our role is pretty hands-off.
More On the Role of a Labor Doula
Emotional Support: Childbirth can be an intense experience, both physically and mentally. A labor doula provides a calming presence, offering reassurance and encouragement. They help alleviate fears and anxieties, creating a safe space where the birthing person can focus on bringing their baby into the world.
Physical Support: A doula is skilled in techniques to ease the physical discomforts of labor. This can include massage, breathing exercises, and positioning suggestions to help the birthing person cope with contractions. They may also use tools like birthing balls or rebozos to facilitate labor progress and comfort.
Informational Support: A doula helps the birthing person and their partner navigate the overwhelming amount of information surrounding childbirth. They provide evidence-based knowledge about labor stages, medical interventions, and birthing options, empowering the birthing person to make informed decisions aligned with their birth plan.
Advocacy: While a doula does not speak for the birthing person, they help ensure that their wishes are respected by healthcare providers. They assist in communicating the birthing person’s preferences and help them feel more confident in their choices.

The emotional and physical support provided by a doula can make a significant difference in the overall birth experience.
Support for Partners: Doulas don’t just support the birthing person—they also help the partner. A doula can guide the partner on how to assist effectively, ensuring they feel confident and included in the birthing process.
