The Importance of Childbirth Education

I don’t like to sugarcoat things so I’ll just cut to the chase here. Simply put: Childbirth education is a must. Especially if you're giving birth in the hospital. I felt strongly about this before I was a doula and educator and I feel even more passionate about this now.

In an email I recently got from Dr. Nicole Rankins, an OB and podcast host, I read the following and I feel like she sums up my feelings really well.

…every day getting ready for your birth that involves Google or scrolling on social media is another day closer to your due date. And without unbiased information to help you get your mind right for your birth, understand what's happening in your body during labor, prepare for postpartum, and everything in between… you’re going to keep feeling the way you are now. Overwhelmed by the enormous amount of conflicting information you’re getting from friends, family, and people who don’t understand the birth experience you want. Uncertain about what to expect when you’re finally at the hospital, in labor, counting contractions, and seeing machines you’ve never seen before. Fearful that you don’t know enough about your options for medications and interventions (like pitocin, breaking your water, a vaginal exam, or internal monitors) that your medical team will likely put in front of you during labor… Even scared that you could die during childbirth. I want better for you. I want you to march into that labor and delivery room knowing exactly what could happen and confident that you’re ready for whatever is thrown your way.
