Community Partner on Baby Showers v. Mother Blessings

For this month’s final feature from my Community Partner, we talk about thinking beyond baby showers and how things like a Mother's Blessing can support people on their journey to parenthood.

Featuring Marina and Stardust Standard this month has come with such ease and joy. I’m thankful that Central Ohioans have access to this fine human and that the world can know her through the technology we’ve all come to know and love. I’m so thankful for the chance to call her my friend, my guide toward wellness and wisdom, and to get to share her voice here with you. Without further ado, her thoughts are below.

The traditional practice of a mother's blessing, also known as a blessingway, is a beautiful and meaningful ceremony designed to support mothers as they prepare for childbirth and motherhood. A mother's blessing is centered around creating a supportive space for the mother-to-be to connect with her community, reflect on her journey, and prepare for the transformative experience of becoming a mother.

A mother's blessing is often hosted by a close friend or family member, and may include a range of activities such as guided meditations, sharing circles, and ritual ceremonies. One common ritual is to create a birth necklace, where each guest brings a bead or charm to represent their support and love for the mother.

During the ceremony, the mother may receive gifts such as herbal foot soaks and massages, which are intended to nourish and nurture her body in preparation for childbirth. The other women in attendance may also offer words of wisdom, encouragement, and support for the mother-to-be.

The concept of a mother's blessing has its roots in traditional Navajo culture, where it is called a "blessingway." However, the practice has been adapted and adopted by many different cultures and communities around the world.

One of the key elements of a mother's blessing is the emphasis on community and connection. By coming together in support of the mother-to-be, the ceremony helps to build support and solidarity that can be incredibly powerful during the challenging and transformative experience of childbirth and motherhood.

A mother's blessing is a beautiful and meaningful way to honor the journey of motherhood and to create a supportive and empowering space for the mother-to-be. Whether it is based on traditional Navajo practices or adapted to suit modern needs, a mother's blessing is a powerful reminder of the strength, resilience, and love that women bring to the journey of motherhood.
